Speaker

Julian Tait

Julian is CEO and Co-founder of Open Data Manchester, established in 2010. Originally a photographer and filmmaker, he somehow ended up in the world of data. Although different, they are related - but you can ask him about that. He is passionate about the need for people to take more control over their data and the technologies built upon it, especially when it relates to the places where we live, work and play. Much of his work centres on making the invisible visible because if we don't know what we have, others will take it from us.

Workshop: Radical by design: Data, democracy and the power of participation

Design shapes the systems that shape our lives. But who gets to participate in that process — and who gets left out?

Drawing on fifteen years of practice at the intersection of data, community and democratic agency, this session takes an unconventional route into some urgent questions. Through psychogeographic exploration, hands-on making and real-world case studies — from mapping urban mobility with elderly residents to understanding women's experiences of public safety — we'll explore what meaningful participation looks like when systems are complex and the stakes are high.
