Emma Parnell & Videha Sharma

About Emma
Emma has worked as a designer for almost 20 years. She helps organisations design services that meet the needs of their users. For the last 10 years Emma has practiced service design and co-design; primarily with charities, government and healthcare institutions before founding Joy.

Building connection is at the heart of Emma’s work. She is passionate about the relational aspect of service design because ultimately services are delivered by people. Emma is a skilled and empathetic facilitator who prides herself on her ability to bring different perspectives together in a safe way.

Emma is a champion for inclusive design and equity of access for all - especially in the gender diversity space.

About Videha

Videha has worked at the intersection of healthcare, technology and design for over a decade. Originally trained as a surgeon, he now focuses on designing and delivering digital and data-led services across the NHS. Specifically, he helps research teams and healthcare organisations turn complex ideas into solutions that work in real clinical settings. Alongside his role at the University of Manchester, he co-founded Fava Health, a company focussed on making genomics part of everyday care.

His diverse background gives him a practical understanding of how services are experienced on the front line—and how they can be improved. With experience across clinical practice, academia and industry, he brings together diverse perspectives and leads multidisciplinary teams to create new and better ways of delivering care.

He’s passionate about user-centred design, building trustworthy digital services, and making sure technology works equitably for patients and clinicians.

A doctor and a designer walked into a hospital...

Videha, a doctor, and Emma, a designer, have experienced the impact of design and clinical partnerships. In 2025 they worked together to design a minimum viable genomics testing service for stroke patients in three hospitals.

During this session they will share tales from the front line that have informed their thinking around why, and how, the combination of design and clinical skills can help us deliver healthcare services that work for both users and staff.
