News: Nexer Digital secures ICO contract to enhance regulator’s online services

Nexer Digital has been appointed by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to support the next phase of its online services. As more people rely on the ICO’s digital channels to understand and exercise their data rights, it’s vital these services remain clear, accessible and sustainable. Our team will work closely with the ICO to strengthen the experience across its platforms, building on our long-standing commitment to inclusive, user‑centred design.

Human-centred design agency Nexer Digital has been awarded a two-year contract, with the option to extend for a third year, with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to support the ongoing development of the regulator’s digital platforms.

The ICO, the UK’s independent regulator for data protection and information rights, has seen demand for its digital services grow rapidly. Its website attracts around 600,000 visits a month, ten times the volume handled by its call centres, and has become the main way for organisations and individuals to engage with the regulator. Since 2018, the number of organisations registered with the ICO has more than doubled to over 1.2m, highlighting the need for a resilient and user-friendly online presence.

Built on the Umbraco CMS and Microsoft technologies, the ICO’s online services are a vital resource for people and organisations seeking to understand and uphold their data rights. Nexer will work with the regulator to support and optimise the website, and deliver a programme of work to improve the user experience, accessibility and sustainability of the platforms, with a focus on modernising services through data-driven design, personalisation and AI.

Nexer Digital, based in Macclesfield, is one of only a handful of UK agencies to hold Umbraco’s Contributing Platinum Partner status. It also has more Umbraco MVPs than any other UK agency and leads the Umbraco accessibility and sustainability communities.

We are proud to partner with the ICO on such a significant and meaningful programme of work. The ICO plays a vital role in upholding people’s data rights, and with so many citizens and organisations relying on its digital channels, we are excited to help strengthen and future-proof these services with accessibility and inclusion at their heart.

The Nexer Digital team impressed us with their user-centred, inclusive approach as well as their strong technical credentials. Our website is the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of people every month, and demand is only increasing. This partnership will ensure we can continue to provide clear, accessible and dependable services to the public and the organisations we regulate, while also laying the foundations for future innovation.
