Nexer Summit Malmö – The digital path to a sustainable future

We joined the Nexer Summit in Malmö for an insightful morning exploring how digitalisation is a key enabler for sustainability.

As our planet faces unprecedented challenges from climate change, businesses have a crucial role to play in driving sustainability. At Nexer, we recognise that digitalisation is a key enabler for sustainability, and at this mornings Nexer Summit in Malmö, we heard from leading voices in this field and took part in the discussion topics.

It's important to understand that humans are the only species on Earth that produce waste to sustain our survival. Our overconsumption and overproduction have led to unsustainable practices that have detrimental effects on the planet. We have more processing power in the smartphones in our pockets than what landed the moon, we need to use technology to our advantage to find more sustainable ways of doing things and reverse some of the damage that has already been done.

Moores Law, which states that computers processing power doubles every 18-24 months, has profoundly impacted the speed of development and business disruption. In the next ten years, 40% of the Fortune 500 will no longer exist. And in the coming 100 years, we'll see 20,000 years of technological development.

Technological progress alone are not enough to save our planet. The Carbon Law, which seeks to cut carbon emissions in half each decade, is slow compared to Moores Law. We need social tipping points and behaviour changes to achieve sustainable development. We need to create scalable climate solutions that meet user needs whilst radically reducing emissions.

At Nexer, we recognise that sustainability isn't a separate 'thing' but rather a key thread that weaves through our processes, services, products and global company. We must measure progress, for ourselves and for our clients, and be transparent about our impact on the environment.

Collaboration is king, and we must work together to create a common space within the Nexer group. We can't solve the climate crisis by working in silos. Finding new ways to work together, learn together, and contribute towards exponential thinking will be crucial in achieving sustainable development. Sustainability is a brand value that we are seeing more often for clients, and it's our job to help them translate their products and services into something more planet-centred.

Circularity and regeneration are key concepts to consider in the transition towards sustainability. We must create both short and long-term goals and consider how digital interfaces and services can support consumers in making better choices. Feedback loops and traceability can also help make better decisions.

Greenwashing is a real issue, and we must avoid it at all costs. Trust and transparency are essential components of sustainable development. We need to be vocal about our intentions and why we're pioneering new initiatives. We must demonstrate integrity and invest in sustainability, and show tangible results.

In conclusion, digitalisation is a crucial enabler for sustainability, and we must harness its power to drive sustainable development. We must be transparent about our impact, invest in sustainability, and work together to achieve our goals. Only then can we create a lasting legacy and leave a positive impact on the planet.
